Sex chat etiquette: how to flirt online without being creepy
The unwritten rules of adult chat rooms: better openers than 'hey', how to read interest, when to get explicit, and how to take no for an answer.

There's a fine line between flirty and creepy, and in sex chat it's mostly about one thing: whether the other person invited it. Here's how to stay on the right side.
Openers that work
"Hey" gets ignored. Give them something to reply to:
- Comment on what they said in the room.
- Ask a playful question: "Best or worst pickup line you've ever had?"
- Mention something on their profile.
- Be a bit cheeky: "You seem like trouble. Am I right?"
Read the signs
Interested: long replies, questions back, emoticons, them steering it flirty.
Not interested: one-word answers, slow replies, "lol" with nothing else, changing the subject.
If you're getting the second list, a graceful exit ("nice chatting, have a good night ;)") leaves the door open. Pushing slams it.
Ask before getting explicit
In the rooms, banter is fine. One-on-one, check first: "Can I be honest about what I'm thinking right now?" A yes makes the next message twice as hot. A no saves you both the awkwardness.
The R18 rooms are for adults who've chosen to be there, but even there, someone being in the room isn't the same as someone saying yes to you.
Don't
- Don't send photos nobody asked for. On Chatroom you can't anyway: photos need the receiver's permission.
- Don't push for numbers or socials. If they want to share, they will.
- Don't keep messaging after no. Or after silence.
- Don't share anything from a private chat. Screenshots of someone's messages or photos stay private, and sharing intimate images without consent is a crime in NZ.
- Don't ask for or offer money. That's against the rules, and usually a scam.
Do
- Be specific and be yourself.
- Match their pace.
- Say thank you, even if it doesn't go anywhere.
- Use Block without guilt if someone crosses a line, and Report anyone who seems under 18.
