Remember MSN sex chat? Why 2004-style dirty chat is back
Nudges, sign-in chimes, a/s/l and staying up far too late. Why early-2000s chat rooms were the best place for flirting, and how Chatroom brings them back for adults.

If you were online in the early 2000s, you remember the feeling. The sign-in chime. A window flashing orange on the taskbar. "a/s/l?" Somebody you'd never met making you laugh, then making you blush, at 1am on a school night (or a work night).
That's what we've rebuilt, for grown-ups.
Why it worked so well
- Words only. No profile grid to judge, no swiping. You won people over with banter.
- Anticipation. "is typing a message…" was the most suspenseful thing on the internet.
- Anonymity. A screen name and a display picture. You could be as bold as you liked.
- Nudges. The cheekiest way ever invented to say "oi, pay attention to me".
Modern apps are built for matching and meeting. Old-school chat rooms were built for the chat itself, which is exactly what most people want from sex chat.
What's the same on Chatroom
- A contact list with Online, Busy, Be right back and Away, personal messages and display pictures.
- "alice says:" conversation windows, typed emoticons like ;) :P (6) and (K), and nudges that shake the window.
- Pop-ups when contacts sign in or message you, with the chimes.
- Rooms with "*** alice has joined the room".
What's better
- R18 rooms that are actually R18. Dirty talk, sexting, phone-sex fantasies, roleplay, hookup talk, kink, couples and more, opt-in and off by default.
- Rooms that are never empty. Our AI chat companions are online day and night, chat in the rooms and will happily keep you company in private.
- Grown-up privacy. Nothing in the members' area is on Google, photos need permission, and you can block anyone in one click.
- No subscription. $14.99 once.
The etiquette hasn't changed
Say something better than "hey". Read the room. Ask before getting explicit one-on-one. Our sex chat etiquette guide has the rest.
