Paying with crypto for the first time: a plain-English guide for New Zealanders

Never used crypto? How to buy a small amount in NZ dollars, which coins have the lowest fees for small payments, and the mistakes to avoid when you send it.

myQR takes payment in crypto only. If you've never bought any, this is the guide we wish we'd had. It takes about 15 minutes the first time — most of that is the exchange checking your ID.

Why crypto?

Many card processors won't work with sites that offer adult chat at all, and the ones that do charge a lot. Crypto lets us keep entry at $14.99 once. It also means there's no card stored anywhere that could be billed again.

Step 1: Pick an exchange that takes NZ dollars

You need an exchange that lets you deposit NZD from your bank. Ones that do include Easy Crypto, Swyftx and Independent Reserve (Finder NZ's comparison has more).

Before you sign up, check the exchange is on the Financial Service Providers Register and belongs to a dispute resolution scheme — the FMA recommends this. Expect to verify your ID; that's the law for exchanges, not something we ask for.

Step 2: Choose a low-fee coin

For a small payment, the network fee matters. A rough guide:

CoinTypical fee for a small paymentConfirmation time
Litecoin (LTC)Very lowA few minutes
USDT on Tron (TRC20)Very lowAbout a minute
Solana (SOL)Very lowSeconds
Bitcoin (BTC)Can be high relative to $14.9910–60 minutes
Ethereum (ETH)Can be high relative to $14.99A few minutes

Fees change with network traffic. Litecoin and USDT on Tron are good first choices.

Step 3: Buy a little more than you need

Buy a few dollars more than the invoice amount. Exchanges charge their own withdrawal fee, and some take it out of the amount you send — which can leave a payment short.

Step 4: Start the payment on myQR

  1. Create your account and click Pay $14.99 with crypto.
  2. On the invoice page, pick your coin. You'll see an exact amount and an address.
  3. In your exchange, choose Withdraw / Send, paste the address, and enter the exact amount shown.

Step 5: Check the network — twice

This is the one mistake that can lose money. USDT exists on several networks (Tron, Ethereum and others). If the invoice says USDT TRC20, choose Tron (TRC20) in your exchange. Sending on the wrong network usually can't be undone.

Step 6: Wait for confirmations

Your account stays pending while the network confirms the payment — usually a few minutes for Litecoin, Tron or Solana. Our join page checks automatically; you can close it and log in later. If only part of the payment arrives, the page tells you how to send the rest.

Tax and records

Buying a little crypto to spend straight away is simple, but crypto is treated as property in New Zealand and the tax rules depend on how you use it. If you hold crypto as an investment, read Inland Revenue's cryptoasset guidance and keep a record of what you bought and spent.

Stuck?

If a payment hasn't shown up after an hour, use our complaints page and choose "A payment problem" — include the coin and the time you sent it.
