Chat rooms for introverts: why typing feels easier (and how to make it work for you)
Time to think before you reply, no small talk at a loud bar, and you can leave whenever you like. Why text chat suits quieter people, and how to get the most out of it.

If a loud bar full of strangers sounds like hard work, you're not alone. Lots of people who are quiet in a crowd are funny, thoughtful company one-on-one. Text chat gives you a way in that suits how you work.
Why typing is easier
- You get time to think. Nobody can see you pause. Write a reply, delete it, write a better one.
- You can watch first. Read a room for a while before you say anything. Nobody minds.
- No small talk required. Rooms are built around a topic (music, gaming, the outdoors), so there's always something real to talk about.
- Leaving is easy. "Got to go, good chatting" and you're out. No awkward goodbye at the door.
- You set your energy level. Busy, Away or Appear offline lets you be around without being available.
Making it work for you
Start by replying, not by announcing. Find one message you've got something to say about and answer that person by name. It's much easier than opening with "hi all".
Go one-on-one when you're ready. Group chat can be a lot. Once you click with someone in a room, a private message is quieter. If they don't reply, let it go: plenty of other people will.
Let your personal message do the work. The one line under your name ("on my third rewatch of a very bad movie") gives people an easy way to start talking to you.
Keep a short contact list. You don't need fifty contacts. Three or four people you enjoy talking to is plenty, and you'll see when they're online.
Use your status honestly. Appear offline when you need a night off. Nobody gets a notification and nobody's offended.
Leave when you've had enough. You don't owe anyone a long conversation. "Heading off, chat another time" is enough.
Not instead of real life, as well as
Chat won't replace a friend who turns up with soup when you're sick. But plenty of good friendships start with typing, and for quieter people that's often the easiest way in. When you do want to meet someone, our safety checklist for meeting up has you covered.
