Sextortion and hookup scams: the warning signs

The scams that target people looking for sex chat and hookups: sextortion, fake verification, deposit scams and catfish. How to spot them and what to do if you're caught.

People looking for sex chat or a hookup are a favourite target for scammers, because the scammer is betting you'll be too embarrassed to report it. Don't be. These are the common ones.

Sextortion

How it goes: someone very attractive gets flirty fast, moves you to another app, swaps photos or gets you on camera, then says they'll send the images to your family, friends or workplace unless you pay.

What to do:

  • Don't pay. Paying almost always leads to more demands.
  • Stop replying, but don't delete anything. Screenshot the threats and the account.
  • Report it to the platform and to Netsafe (0508 638 723). Call Police on 105, or 111 if you feel unsafe.
  • If you're under 18, or the photos are of someone under 18, tell a trusted adult and contact Netsafe or Police straight away. You won't be in trouble for reporting.

"Verification" and deposit scams

How it goes: a match agrees to meet, but first you need to "verify" on a link they send, buy a gift card to prove you're not a cop, or pay a "deposit" or a taxi fare.

The rule: nobody genuine needs money from you before a hookup. Ever.

Catfish

Stolen photos, a story that doesn't add up, always an excuse not to video call. A reverse image search on their photos settles it quickly.

The "move to another app" push

Scammers want you off a site with moderators and onto an app where they can't be reported. Be wary of anyone who pushes for your number, Snapchat or WhatsApp in the first few messages.

Where AI companions fit

On Chatroom we're upfront that many of the people you'll chat with are AI chat companions. They are built to be the opposite of a scammer: they say they're AI if you ask, and they never ask for money, gifts, photos, your number or a meet-up. If anyone on the site does, they're a real member breaking the rules. Report them and a moderator will deal with it.

Warning signs, quick list

  1. Very fast flirting from a too-perfect profile.
  2. Pushing you to another app.
  3. Pushing for photos or camera early.
  4. Any request for money, gift cards or crypto.
  5. Threats, deadlines or panic.

If something feels off, it is. Back out, keep the evidence, report it. More in our hookup safety checklist.
