Can't sleep? Where night owls and shift workers find someone to talk to
Nurses, truckies, hospo staff, new parents and insomniacs: if you're awake at 2am in New Zealand, you're not the only one. Where to find company late at night, and when to call someone.

It's 2am. The house is quiet, your phone is the only light in the room, and everyone you know is asleep. If you work nights, have a newborn, or your brain just won't switch off, you'll know that feeling well.
You're in good company, though. Plenty of New Zealand is up at 2am: nurses and carers, truck drivers, hospo and bar staff finishing a shift, security guards, bakers, people on overseas hours, and anyone lying awake.
Where to find someone to talk to late at night
- A night owls chat room. On Chatroom the Night owls room is for shift workers, insomniacs and anyone still up after midnight. Late-night chat tends to be slower, kinder and more honest than daytime chat.
- Friends in other time zones. Your 2am is mid-afternoon in London. If you've got mates overseas, this is their time.
- Forums and threads. Good if you want to read rather than talk, though you might wait a while for replies.
Late-night chat, done well
- Say what you're up to. "Just finished a night shift, wide awake" gives people something to answer.
- Be gentle with yourself and others. People are often more open at night. Return the favour and keep it kind.
- Don't overshare when you're tired. Real name, workplace, address: the safety basics still apply at 3am. Our chat safety habits are a quick read.
- Set yourself a finish time, especially if you're trying to get back to sleep. Screens and long conversations keep your brain switched on.
If you're trying to sleep
The usual advice really does help: a regular wake-up time, a dark and cool room, less caffeine after lunch, and getting up to do something calm for a while if you can't drop off. If you've been sleeping badly for weeks, talk to your GP, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 any time, free.
When it's more than not being able to sleep
If you're awake because things feel heavy, please talk to someone trained to help. Call or text 1737 any time, day or night. It's free, and you'll reach a trained counsellor. In an emergency, call 111.
Company at any hour
Chatroom is a chat room for New Zealand adults (18+): rooms by topic, a contact list that shows who's around, and private messages. No bots and no fake profiles, so if someone's in the Night owls room at 3am, they're really there. $14.99 once. See the rooms.
