How R18 channels work: opt-in, consent and staying in control

R18 channels on myQR are off by default. Here's how the opt-in works, what the rules are, how photo permissions work, and how to switch it all off again.

Some people come to myQR for the music room. Some come for the R18 channels. Most come for a bit of both. We designed R18 so that nobody sees anything they didn't choose to.

Off by default, for everyone

Every member starts with R18 switched off. While it's off:

  • R18 rooms don't appear in your room list at all.
  • Nobody can send you photos.
  • Your "I'm into…" tags (if you set any) aren't shown.

To switch it on, use the R18 switch in your contact list or Options. You'll be asked to confirm you're 18 or over and want to see adult chat. You can switch it off again with one click — that also withdraws every photo permission you've given.

The rules in R18 rooms

R18 rooms are for adults who've chosen to be there. Adult conversation is fine; harassment isn't. Every R18 room shows its rules at the top:

  • Ask before getting explicit one-on-one.
  • No photos or links in rooms — photos only in private messages, with permission.
  • Never share anyone's photos, name, workplace or address without their consent.
  • No one under 18, ever. No selling sex.
  • Meeting up? Meet somewhere public first.

Photos: three keys, not one

A photo can only be sent in a private conversation when:

  1. Both of you have R18 switched on,
  2. you're accepted contacts, and
  3. the person receiving has clicked Allow photos from you in that conversation.

The sender confirms, for every photo, that they're in it or that everyone in it is an adult who agreed to it going to that person. Photos arrive hidden, the sender can unsend them, they delete themselves after a few days, and location data is stripped before they're saved.

If something isn't right

Click Report on any message, name or photo. A reported photo is hidden from both people immediately while a moderator reviews it, and the sender can't send more photos until that's done. Reports about non-consensual images, anyone who might be under 18, or anything illegal are dealt with within 48 hours.

Anyone — member or not — can use our complaints page. Read more about consent and the law in New Zealand.
